- Roe vs Wade was a stretch for the Supreme Court even by 1973 standards. They needed to juggle so many tangential interpretations to the right to privacy that Americans learned a new idea: penumbra. Nobody uses that word penumbra unless they are an astronomer or Supreme Court justice.
